Robert Watkins, M.D.

Dr. Robert Watkins is a spine surgeon, co-director of The Marina Spine Center. His expertise ranges from innovative spine surgeries to treatment of sports related injuries. In fact, his practice includes the successful treatment of professional athletes from all over the country, as well as adolescent sports heroes and recreational athletes. He is a founding member of the North American Spine Society, the largest spine society in the United States and was the past society Secretary. As a surgeon, a speaker and an author, he has become a renowned expert in orthopaedic injuries to the back and neck. He has lectured all over the world. He has authored many papers, chapters, and books including “The Surgical Approaches to the Spine,” published by Springer/Verlag and “The Spine in Sports,” published by C.V. Mosby Yearbook, a compilation of chapters on the management of spine injuries in every sport. Dr. Robert Watkins has participated in several FDA approved investigational studies and is currently a primary investigator on the ProDisc artificial disc replacement study. Dr. Robert Watkins, Jr, is a spine surgeon and co-director of The Marina Spine Center. His areas of specialty include minimally invasive spine surgery, image guidance, disc replacement, and spinal deformity. Dr. Watkins, Jr. completed his medical degree at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine where he was student body president for two years. He performed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California General Hospital and then completed a spine fellowship at The Queen's Medical Centre in England. Following his fellowship, Dr. Watkins, Jr. was a traveling spine fellow throughout Europe specializing in artificial disc replacement and scoliosis surgery. Dr. Watkins, Jr. lectures frequently to physical therapist, doctor, and patient groups and is a member of the admissions board at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. David Chang, M.D.

Dr. Chang specializes in surgical treatment of spinal disorders.  He has worked and studied in both coasts of the country.  After graduating from Princeton University, he received his medical degree from New York University.  He completed his orthopaedic surgical training at NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases.  He completed an advanced fellowship in orthopaedic spinal surgery with Drs. Robert Watkins and Lytton Williams.  With his training under Dr. Watkins, Dr. Chang understands the complexities of sports related spinal injuries.  Additionally, Dr. Chang’s interest lies in minimally invasive spinal surgery, artificial disc replacement technology and degenerative disorders of the cervical and lumbar spine with or without radiculopathy.
